About Capital Clash — Match Countries and Capitals

Everyone knows Paris goes with France. The trouble starts with Australia (Canberra, not Sydney) and Turkey (Ankara, not Istanbul). Capital Clash lays out a grid of countries and capital cities and asks you to pair them up before the clock gets away from you. Three quick rounds, six pairs each, and a running timer keeping the pressure on. It's a small game with a sneaky amount of learning packed in — the sort of thing you play once and then can't stop replaying to beat your time.

Getting started

Tap a country, then tap its capital — or go the other way, capital first. A right pair locks in and scores; a wrong one costs you a little. Clear all six and you bank a time bonus for finishing fast, then it's on to the next round. Do it three times and you'll see your total stacked against your previous best.

Why teachers use it

Matching country to capital over and over is exactly how these pairings stick, and doing it against a clock keeps kids engaged where a worksheet wouldn't. It's a solid warm-up before a quiz. Have a look at all 19 free learning games, or go sightseeing in Landmark Locator.

Common questions

Why do mistakes cost points?
The penalty is there to reward knowing the answer over guessing. Tapping Sydney for Australia's capital, when it's actually Canberra, will nudge your score down, so it pays to be sure.

What's the fastest way to clear a round?
Match the pairs you're certain of first to shrink the board, then work out the rest by elimination. Fewer wrong taps and a quick finish both add to the time bonus.

Which capitals trip people up the most?
The ones that aren't the biggest city, like Brasilia for Brazil or Ottawa for Canada. A few rounds and those stop catching you out.
